We have a class composition grant for our grade 7 and grade 8 French Immersion classes. We have a bilingual certified teacher (Ms. Stephanie Campbell) with our classes (FI Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies) for 12 full days spread over a period of 30 days. Ms. Campbell will be working one-on-one with students as well as in small groups helping students with their reading and writing skills.
7F French Immersion Social Studies - We have covered very quickly our geographic outcomes related to our unit on Ancient Rome. Students are currently presenting biographies of famous Romans. Once the presentations are finished, we will classify them in order chronologically and then discuss which one may have been the most important.
7F/8F French Immersion Language Arts - We have finally finished reading the novel "La Fille Parfaite". We are working on some end-of-novel projects to complete our study. All students must complete a profile on one of the characters from the novel. Students have taken notes on the characters throughout the novel, so all have a good basis on which to write a profile of a half to a full page.
Students will then have a choice of another assignment related to the novel. They are to either a) present an improvisation to the class b) do a drawing of a scene from the novel c) explain a favorite scene from the novel or d) write a comparison of this novel to our last novel, "Carmen en Fugue Mineur."
Students are to then pass in their booklets which will be marked again as part of their mark for the last semester.

Grade 9 French Immersion Westisle course selection
A note for all grade 9 French Immersion students and parents of grade 9 students...
Rene Hurtubise, the French consultant for the Western School Board will be in the classroom on Tuesday, March 29th to speak with the grade 9 French Immersion students. The grade 9s will soon be making their course selections for grade 10, and some will be making choices whether to continue with the French Immersion program. Mr. Hurtubise's presentation will focus on the advantages of bilingualism.
9F French Immersion Social Studies and 9B English Social Studies
As a federal election was called over the March Break, we will begin a unit of study on the Political Culture of Atlantic Canada (chapter 9 of textbook) as well as a special Election Unit of Study that will conclude the week of May 2nd. Various projects that we will work on during the next 5 weeks are: Election timeline project, daily news updates from the election campaign, biographies of the leaders of the 4 major political parties, simulated leaders debate in the classroom, electoral districts of PEI mapping project and student vote for grade 9s in the school on May 2nd. Results of the student vote will be published in Island newspapers.
Update for grade 7 French Immersion Social Studies (I forgot the update for this class in my last blog entry!)
We will likely spend another two weeks on Ancient Greece. Students had begun a mini-biography assignment just prior to the March Break on various famous people from Ancient Greece (Socrates, Plato, Hippocrates, etc.). This week, students will present their biographies and we will discuss why they are important and perhaps debate who is the most important.

March update
7F French Immersion Social Studies - Students have covered the geography of Ancient Greece and are now reviewing the social groups and the economic activities of Ancient Greece. Assignment that is now in progress is a comic strip that depicts an economic activity using the social classes of Ancient Greece as examples.
Recent assignments that have been marked and returned to the students are: Map of Ancient Greece, assignment on the flora and fauna of Ancient Greece, and a short mini-research assignment on an architectural example again of Ancient Greece.
7F/8F French Immersion Language Arts - We have started a new novel, "La Fille Parfaite." Different from the previous novel that we studies, I have created a booklet to go along with the novel so that the students can keep notes as we read on the characters as well as doing chapter summaries and any definitions or questions that I may assign. I look forward to showing you their progress with the novel at parent-teacher interviews is early April.
Film critique assignments have been returned to the students. All students have completed their presentations on different gods/goddesses and their notes have been assigned and returned to them last Friday. Late assignments have been marked and will be returned tomorrow.
Grade 7 students are participating in a shared reading and writing activity with Mrs. Jeffery's 7B Enhanced French class, one class every 6 day cycle. The students have worked twice with the enhanced group, first helping them with a written assignment and then working with students on their reading comprehension. Students are working well with their assigned partners and both Mrs. Jeffery and myself are pleased with this new collaborative idea. Students are also enjoying and benefitting from this experience.
8F French Immersion Social Studies - Heritage Fair is on Tuesday, March 8th. Students have been given some time to prepare their projects in class over the past month. Tomorrow, March 2nd, the first 4-5 student projects will be presented in class as practice for the Heritage Fair and the last 3-4 projects will be presented on Friday, March 4th. This will give students time to make any last minute improvements or changes (if necessary) before Tuesday. The Heritage Fair project will be worth at least 20% of their 3rd semester mark.
A 10 point assignment will be returned to students tomorrow regarding the influence of the geography of Italy during the Renaissance period as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the various geographic features on the development of the Florence. The students received marks for their map assignment on Monday, February 28th.

9F French Immersion Social Studies - We have completed chapter one, an introduction to the geography of Atlantic Canada, in their textbooks, La Diversite du Canada Atlantique. Students wrote a test on chapter one roughly two weeks ago and have received their marks. We have now nearly completed the second chapter continuing on the geography theme, but also learning about time zones, and the interaction between people and their environment. On March 3rd, students will receive a short assignment entitled, "What makes Atlantic Canada Unique and Exceptional?" that will have to be completed and presented by early next week.
9B English Social Studies - We have completed chapter one, an introduction to the geography of Atlantic Canada, in their textbooks, Atlantic Canada in the Global Community. Students wrote a test on chapter one roughly two weeks ago and have received their marks.
Presently, we are working on stations in the library which cover the outcomes for the second unit of study in the grade 9 program. We have spent approximately 5 classes in the library and have 5 more classes booked. Students are expected to have their 12 stations complete in the next five classes. If students have not completed their stations they are expected to work at them during their time before homeroom in the morning, or during their recess break and/or lunch break. Deadline to have the stations completed is Thursday, March 17th.

If students have not completed their stations they are expected to work at them during their time before homeroom in the morning, or during their recess break and/or lunch break.
