9B English Social Studies - We are trying to complete our Global Studies theme before the Christmas break. Currently, the students are working on a slide show presentation in partners. Each slide show presents information on NGO's currently working in Canada or around the world. (Examples: UNICEF, Oxfam, Reporters without Borders, Free the Children, Save the Children, Food Banks, YMCA, the Salvation Army, Katimavik, etc.) I hope that we will have time to present them before the Christmas break, if not we will complete the unit of study the first week of January.
Students also have another short assignment due before the break, a short written assignment 3/4-1 page response/reflection on either: quotations from Bono, Ghandhi, Stephen Lewis, Eleanor Roosevelt, article "Nothing but Nets" Sports Illustrated, or Ms. Dyment's presentation on her year teaching in the North. Corrected assignments and other work will be returned to students upon their return in the New Year.

9F French Immersion Language Arts - We have finally completed the novel, Carmen en fugue mineure, as well as the final project to conclude our theme on the "Voyage Personnel." We have begun a new theme, Mythologies of the World. Currently the students are learning of the differences between gods/goddesses, extraordinary humans, super-heros, and legends. This week we are reading about the legend of Saint Nicolas, and discussing the transformation from Saint to Santa. Grade 9 students also have a dictation exercice for marks, before Christmas Break. I hope to have all Carmen-related assignments back to the students when they return the first week of January.
8F French Immersion Social Studies - We are nearing the conclusion of the unit of study on the Middle Ages. At the moment, students are examining the societies of France and England in comparison to the Muslim territories in the Middles Ages. We have begun a project of creating an artistic interpretation of something that represents the students' daily lives but in the style of art from these societies. This assignment is due before the Christmas holidays. I hope to have many assignments corrected and returned to the students the first week of January 2011.

7F French Immersion Social Studies - Students have completed a project related the social groups which make up Ancient Egypt. Prior to the Christmas break, we will complete a lesson related to the economic activities of Ancient Egypt. This week, the Social Studies consultant from the Department of Education, will be in to observe this class, as we are piloting the implementation of this new program this year. Students have been watching a video (Il etait une fois...l'homme) related to the materials covered so far this year in cartoon form. Students seem to be enjoying this film; I hope it brings further understanding of the development of ancient civilisations in our world. The first week of January, I will return the assignments done since the November report card to the students.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011!
