We have a class composition grant for our grade 7 and grade 8 French Immersion classes. We have a bilingual certified teacher (Ms. Stephanie Campbell) with our classes (FI Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies) for 12 full days spread over a period of 30 days. Ms. Campbell will be working one-on-one with students as well as in small groups helping students with their reading and writing skills.
7F French Immersion Social Studies - We have covered very quickly our geographic outcomes related to our unit on Ancient Rome. Students are currently presenting biographies of famous Romans. Once the presentations are finished, we will classify them in order chronologically and then discuss which one may have been the most important.
7F/8F French Immersion Language Arts - We have finally finished reading the novel "La Fille Parfaite". We are working on some end-of-novel projects to complete our study. All students must complete a profile on one of the characters from the novel. Students have taken notes on the characters throughout the novel, so all have a good basis on which to write a profile of a half to a full page.
Students will then have a choice of another assignment related to the novel. They are to either a) present an improvisation to the class b) do a drawing of a scene from the novel c) explain a favorite scene from the novel or d) write a comparison of this novel to our last novel, "Carmen en Fugue Mineur."
Students are to then pass in their booklets which will be marked again as part of their mark for the last semester.
8F French Immersion Social Studies - We have covered very quickly our geographic outcomes related to our new unit of study l'Amérique Française. Students are currently working in groups of 3 to determine the reasons for the Acadian Deportation.
9F French Immersion Language Arts - Mathieu Lippé concert, Monday, May 16th at the Centre Belle Alliance in Summerside. The grade 9 students have been invited by the Department of Education to attend a concert in Summerside. We are discovering the poetry, stories and music of Mathieu Lippé. Students are to have their permission slips to my by Friday, May 14th. We will go out to lunch after the concert and then return to school by 1:00 o'clock.
We have finally finished reading the novel "La Fille Parfaite". We are working on some end-of-novel projects to complete our study. As explained in my blog of April 16th, all grade 9 students will be participating in the Student Vote/Vote Étudiant. Hernewood is one of 4000 schools across Canada that is hosting a vote as part of the federal election. Grade 9 students will be voting for a candidate in the constituency of Egmont. Students are able to vote:
Wednesday, April 27th, (Advance Poll) if in band please use this opportunity to vote before Homeroom, during recess and on the second half of their lunch.
Thursday, April 28th before Homeroom, during recess and on the second half of their lunch.
Friday, April 29th before Homeroom, during recess and on the second half of their lunch.
Votes will be counted and sent in to the Student Vote organisation on Friday. Results of our vote will note be released until after the polls close on Monday, May 2nd.
Thanks in advance to all students who volunteered to work at our polling station and to those students who went to all the grade 9 classes to explain the procedures of voting.
Egmont Candidates' Forum
Thanks very much to Egmont candidates Guy Gallant, Jacquie Robichaud and Gail Shea for attending our Egmont Candidates' Forum. Grade 9 students were happy to hear the views of all the candidates as this will help them make their decision come voting day. Media also in attendance were the Journal Pioneer, the West Prince Graphic and CBC television did some interviews outside the school doors.
The grade 9 Social Studies classes, both English and French Immersion, are continuing to follow the election using various media, but will be focusing in on information regarding the riding of Egmont to better inform their vote leading up to the May 2nd election. Following May 2nd, we will be analysing the result and watching how the next federal government is set up over the next month.

Report cards will be sent home Thursday, April 21st. The fourth and last semester of 2010-2011 has begun! Students will be receiving many corrected assignments from the third semester this week.

Grade 9 students at Hernewood participate in Student Vote/Vote Etudiant
Both my grade 9 Social Studies classes (English - 9B and French Immersion as well as Ms. Thomson's and Ms. Dyment's grade 9 Social Studies classes) are participating in their first experience as voters in a Federal Election. The results of this vote will be publicized in the media after the polls for the official election close on Monday, May 2nd. Students will be voting for one of the candidates in the riding of Egmont. We have organized a candidates' forum for Wednesday, April 20th, and students will have a chance to listen to the candidate in the race for Egmont, as well as ask them a few questions.
In preparation for voting days (see dates listed below) we have been learning about the rights and responsibilites of voting, we are publicizing the vote (by distributing posters throughout the school) and encouraging all students to exercise their chance to vote, we are learning about the candidates for Egmont, we have watched part of the Leaders' Debate, and are following the news daily to keep up on the issues of concern.

8F French Immersion Social Studies - We have completed our study of the Renaissance and are beginning the last theme of study "L'Amerique Francaise". A map assignment will begin this week and is due prior to Easter Break.

Grade 9 French Immersion Westisle course selection
A note for all grade 9 French Immersion students and parents of grade 9 students...
Rene Hurtubise, the French consultant for the Western School Board will be in the classroom on Tuesday, March 29th to speak with the grade 9 French Immersion students. The grade 9s will soon be making their course selections for grade 10, and some will be making choices whether to continue with the French Immersion program. Mr. Hurtubise's presentation will focus on the advantages of bilingualism.
9F French Immersion Social Studies and 9B English Social Studies
As a federal election was called over the March Break, we will begin a unit of study on the Political Culture of Atlantic Canada (chapter 9 of textbook) as well as a special Election Unit of Study that will conclude the week of May 2nd. Various projects that we will work on during the next 5 weeks are: Election timeline project, daily news updates from the election campaign, biographies of the leaders of the 4 major political parties, simulated leaders debate in the classroom, electoral districts of PEI mapping project and student vote for grade 9s in the school on May 2nd. Results of the student vote will be published in Island newspapers.

We will likely spend another two weeks on Ancient Greece. Students had begun a mini-biography assignment just prior to the March Break on various famous people from Ancient Greece (Socrates, Plato, Hippocrates, etc.). This week, students will present their biographies and we will discuss why they are important and perhaps debate who is the most important.

Upcoming Parent-Teacher interviews (absent)
Early April, I will be attending a Conference of the Canadian Association for Second Language Teachers, and will be unavailable for the regularly scheduled Parent-Teacher interviews, April 7th and April 8th. If you wish to meet with me another time, please send an email mcmcguire@edu.pe.ca, or call the school 859-8710 and we can arrange a time in which to meet. Over the March Break, I intend to get a general idea of marks for the 3rd semester. If I have any causes for concern, I will be in touch either by email or by telephone. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me anytime.
9B English Social Studies - We have one last day in the library when students return from the March Break to complete the 12 assigned stations. If students have stations which are incomplete, they will be told to complete them by April 1st either before Homeroom begins in the morning, or either on their recess or lunch breaks. Students are responsible for stations that have not been completed in the 11 classes spent in the library.
9F French Immersion Social Studies - Yesterday, I introduced a teaching assignment on various sections of chapter 4, Roots of our Population. Students are divided into groups of 3-4 students and are preparing a lesson for their classmates on either the Aboriginal People of Atlantic Canada, Early European Settlement (Acadian, English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish), African-Canadian Communities and finally immigrants from the 1900s to present day in Atlantic Canada. Students will be given two more classes to prepare their lessons, before presenting it in the last days of March.
9F French Immersion Language Arts - Student wrote a dictation today; students that were absent will write it next Monday.
We have read together the first four chapters of the novel, "La Fille Parfaite". Chapter summaries and notes on the main characters have been assigned for various chapters. A journal assignment related the the themes and ideas from the novel was introduced and assigned today. Good copies for this journal assignment is Tuesday, March 29th. We are also learning about improvisation games and have tried a few scenarios. I hope to dedicate some more time for this activity which is great practice for using French vocabulary.
We are continuing to work with Mrs. Jeffery's grade 7 Enhanced French class on their reading, writing and comprehension skills.

The topic choices were all very interesting and students did well presenting their projects to our two francophone judges. Congratulations to our 3 winning projects and our one Honourable Mention. Well done everyone! Our number one placement will be invited to go to the Provincial Heritage Fair mid-May.
We have jumped back into our study of the Renaissance in Italy beginning in the 1300s. We have discussed the defintion of "Humanism" and student will have an assignment on a well-know humanist from the Renaissance period upon their return to school the last week of March.
